Released in 1960, the Land Cruiser 40 was the 3rd generation Land Cruiser and continued to sell for 24 years to become the longest selling model in Japanese automotive history. Earning high praise in Japan and around the world for its reliability as a cross-country 4WD machine, the chassis was a carryover from the 2nd generation with four wheelbase types: short, medium, long, and super long (mainly for overseas markets). Available with soft-top, hardtop, pick-up truck and cab, the Land Cruiser 40 was adaptable to a wide variety of environments. Early models were only available with 3.8-liter in-line 6-cylinder gasoline engine, but in 1974 Japan’s first 3-liter 4-cylinder diesel was added (overseas models were the first with a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder diesel). Not only highly economical, it could also be registered as a 4-cylinder car, driving huge increases in demand from both individual consumers and commercial organizations. Subsequent major upgrades in 1979 and 1980 continued to evolve with consumer demands for more comfort and 4WD power, which coincided with reduced demand from the commercial sector. GR Heritage Parts continues to produce and sell Land Cruiser parts more than 60 years after its release to keep up with its enduring popularity even today.
