The 8th generation Skyline was known as the R32 and earned widespread admiration for a number of reasons. Its predecessor, the R31, had shifted toward the high-end luxury aesthetic popular at the time, however, this move alienated many longtime Skyline enthusiasts. Recognizing this disconnect, Nissan set out to recapture the model’s performance-driven roots with the R32, reviving the spirit of the ‘Skyline of speed.’
The sleek flowing curves of the R32’s dynamic design replaced the angular lines of the R31. Its body was also downsized compared to its predecessor, emphasizing agility and lighter weight —qualities that significantly enhanced its driving performance.
Major advancements to the chassis were also introduced including a newly developed four-wheel multi-link suspension system that delivered superior handling, while the HICAS four-wheel steering system first introduced with the R31, evolved into the more advanced "Super HICAS." Higher-grade models were further equipped with aluminum four-pot opposed brake calipers that delivered more braking power and precision.
Although the engine was carried over from the R31, it was meticulously refined to deliver greater power and efficiency. Paired with the compact body and advanced suspension, the R32 achieved exceptional driving performance that revived the excitement associated with the Skyline name.
While the iconic GT-R variant often steals the spotlight, the standard R32 model also received widespread acclaim. Blending style with performance and practicality, the R32 became a huge success, earning the admiration of dedicated fans and new enthusiasts alike.
